Pipeline geometry inspection is a method that uses the in-line inspection tools to collect the pipeline radius information to evaluate the overall geometric deformation of the pipeline, such as dent, wrinkle, ovality, etc. During operation, the pipeline may be subject to thermal stress caused by temperature and soil force of geological changes, which may lead to overall deformation. Collision and extrusion of hard objects such as stones in the backfill may lead to local depression of the pipeline. The deformed pipeline is prone to stress concentration and damage. Timely pipeline deformation inspection can play an important reference role in pipeline integrity evaluation.
